I will be posting tutorials, tips and answering questions here in the near future. Today I'll start out with a painting that I recently finished to give you an idea of what I do in Corel Painter X and Adobe Photoshop. You can see more of my work by going here.

I recently had a very nice write up in the official Corel Painter Magazine, issue 14. I am best known for my portrait work but also enjoy doing an occasional landscape or still life. The magazine published several of these paintings along with a three page article about me and my work.

I was quite honored and thrilled to say the least. To the right you can see a couple of the paintings shown.

My first blog entry!!!! Drum roll please!

I will be posting tutorials, tips and answering questions here in the near future. Today I'll start out with a painting that I recently finished to give you an idea of what I do in Corel Painter X and Adobe Photoshop. You can see more of my work by going here.

I've just finished a new painting in Corel Painter X. This is a stylistic approach. After taking the photograph and preparing it in Adobe Photoshop, I move it over to Painter X. I started this out by using the Acrylic captured bristle brush to go over the skin and added more color. I used a purply blue to make the shadow areas recede. I have several hair brushes that I like to use, but I think my favorite is Marilyn Sholin's Hair brush. I use that to blend out the hair and then go back to the captured bristle brush to add in color....golds, reddish browns for the highlights and darker browns for the deeper toned areas.

I next started working on the shirt. All that plaid can be daunting to say the least! I used the Grainy Water brush and went back over some areas with the captured bristle brush to keep detail. The old timey gasoline pump was next, grainy water & captured bristle again. I used a larger captured bristle brush, higher resat & opacity to give more texture.

The background is a digital background that I set the painting into and then masked out the areas of the photo that I didn't want. It's not hard to do, just takes a bit of time. After the background was in place, I made the overhead wood sign with screws. I did that in photoshop. It's hand drawn and then texture and text are added.

Then back to Corel Painter and used Tonal Effects/Equalize to make the color pop. I didn't add a paper texture to this because it will be printed on canvas and then hand embellished with acrylic paints and gel medium.
